EKITI GOVERNMENT SEALS OFF COLLAPSED SIX-STOREY BUILDING

Ekiti State Government has sealed off a six-storey building that collapsed on Tuesday at the Adehun area of Ado Ekiti.

The State Commissioner for Physical Planning & Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Oladapo Karounwi made this known during an on-the-spot assessment of the tragic incident.

Rt. Hon. Karounwi who said that unconfirmed reports indicated that no life was lost in the incident, however said appropriate investigation would be carried out to determine the immediate and remote cause of the occurrence with a view to forestall future incidence.

Describing the unfortunate incident as a wake-up call, Karounwi warned that his Ministry would henceforth be very firm in ensuring that all building in the State abide by Government regulations.

He also called on all stakeholders particularly, influential individuals and corporate organizations to desist from trying to unduly influence activities of Government officials regarding implementing building regulations.

The Commissioner said “these regulations ensure safety, durability, and efficiency in building construction. They cover aspects like structural integrity, fire safety, site preparation, and more.”

“As it is, one thing that is very clear and I want to make it abundantly clear that this property is hereby sealed up and seized by the Government of Ekiti state. It is even the policy of the government, when a building collapses like this the ownership for the time being belongs to the government.”

“It’s a wakeup call for the appropriate ministry, that is my ministry and I want to use the opportunity to inform Ekiti state that my ministry will be very firm going forward”.
