
As part of efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in the State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)have launched a flood sensitization campaign in Ikere-Ekiti under the National Preparedness and Response Strategy (NPRS).
The event held at the palace of Ogoga of Ikere Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu, brought together key emergency stakeholders, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Federal and State Fire Services.
Addressing the gathering, the General Manager of SEMA, Mr. Oludare Asaolu said the campaign aimed at raising awareness on flood preparedness and ensure communities are equipped to handle emergencies, citing the recent tragic flooding in Mokwa and Niger State, which Governor Biodun Oyebanji is determined to prevent in Ekiti.
The representative NEMA, Mr.Evans Ugoh, explained that the campaign was a nationwide initiative spanning all 36 states.
He noted that Ikere was strategically selected to serve as a model for local emergency response due to its vulnerability to flooding.
“The collaboration with security and emergency agencies will not only build community resilience but also demonstrate life saving strategies in disaster situations,” Ugoh said.
The event featured live demonstrations by the Red Cross and the Fire Services.
The Red Cross showcased vital techniques for disaster response, including emergency first aid, evacuation methods, and triage procedures during floods.
Similarly, the Fire Services conducted drills on how to handle fire outbreaks, emphasizing the importance of rapid response and public cooperation during emergencies.
Speaking on disaster prevention, the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation,Mrs Laka Kemisola urged residents to refrain from dumping refuse in drainage systems and flood-prone areas.
She advocated for planting of trees to reduce erosion and encouraged regular gutter clearing to prevent blockages.

While highlighting fire safety precautions, she advised residents to unplug electrical appliances during dry seasons and properly extinguish cigarettes to prevent fire outbreaks.
In support of emergency preparedness, Mr. Fred Anusim presented a fully equipped first aid box to the Ikere Local Government Chairman, Hon. Olu Adamolekun, reaffirming the town’s selection as a model for emergency readiness in the state.
Appreciating the gesture, His Royal Majesty Oba Adejimi Adu commended both the Federal and State Governments for their proactive approach.
He urged the authorities to arrest individuals who dump waste in waterways and extended his condolences to victims of the Mokwa flooding incident.
“This campaign is a timely intervention, I urge my people to take it seriously and follow the safety guidelines shared today to protect their lives and property,” the monarch said.
According to him, the Safety Tips for Residents during floods include;avoid walking or driving through flooded areas, evacuating early when warned by authorities,keeping emergency supplies (food, water, first aid) ready.
Preventing fire disasters as well according to him
among others, include removing unused electrical devices particularly during the dry season,availability of fire extinguisher or fire blanket at home,calling fire services immediately in case of a fire incident.
As disaster risks increase due to climate change and human activity, NEMA, SEMA, and supporting Agencies remain committed to equipping communities with the knowledge and tools needed for survival and resilience.
