
The Ekiti State Government, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the TRACE Project has successfully concluded the first phase of shade tree seedling distribution to cocoa farmers across the state.
According to a statement by the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, a total of 4,264 shade tree seedlings were distributed to farmers in five key cocoa-producing communities, namely, Ire-Ekiti, Ayede-Ekiti, Odeyemi Community in Ekiti West Local Government Area, Oye Local Government Area and Aba Ede in Ise Local Government Area under the initiative.
Mr. Boluwade emphasized the numerous benefits of the Shade Tree Seedlings initiative to cocoa farmers, include: protection of freshly grown cocoa plants from the wind and adverse weather condition ensuring improved Crop Yields, increased Income, sustainable Agriculture and Climate Resilience
He noted the species of tree distributed to farmers in this phase is Gmelina, known for its adaptability and ecological benefits.

The Commissioner also revealed that the USDA TRACE Project remains committed to supporting cocoa farmers in the state stressing that future plans include the provision of hybrid and grafted seedlings while the introduction of additional tree species will commence soon.
This intervention reaffirms the Ekiti State Government’s dedication to boosting agricultural productivity, empowering farmers, and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
