Ekiti Govt Urges New Obanla to Promote Peace, Warns that Infighting Can Stall Development

The Ekiti State Government has urged traditional rulers to prevent disunity and infighting in their domains, warning that internal wrangling could stall development in their communities.

The Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Monisade Afuye, gave the warning on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Obanla-in-Council to her office in Ado Ekiti.

Mrs Afuye advised the new Obanla of Ijesa-Isu in Ikole Local Government Area, Oba David Olusegun Ateji, to embrace reconciliation and unite all groups in the community to ensure peace and development.

According to her, the success of the monarch’s reign will depend largely on his ability to maintain harmony among his people.

“You should reach out to those who are aggrieved, especially those who also aspired to the throne. Use your position to unite the people,” she said.

Mrs Afuye noted that labelling anyone an enemy could hinder the progress of the town, stressing that peace and cohesion were essential for sustainable development.

Oba Ateji, from the Omotoyo Royal Dynasty, was crowned last week by the state government to succeed Oba Oso Gabriel Adeniyi, who died on Sept. 23, 2024.

Responding, the monarch commended Gov. Biodun Oyebanji for his respect for traditional institutions and for ensuring a transparent selection process that led to his emergence.

He said he had already begun reconciliation efforts to unite all stakeholders in the community.

“I have started reaching out to those who contested with me because peace is essential. Ijesa-Isu belongs to all of us and we must work together to develop it,” he said.

Oba Ateji assured the government and the people of his commitment to sustaining peace and building on the development efforts of his predecessor.

The Monarch pledged the full backing of his community for the reelection of Governor Oyebanji in the forthcoming governorship election in the State

He also expressed appreciation to the state government for its respect for the traditional institution in the State.
