
…says President Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bill will revolutionize Tax System in Nigeria
The Chairman of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS), Mr Olaniran Olatona has said that his Agency would continue to work assiduously towards improving the State’s Internally Generated Revenue despite recent successes recorded by the Service which has seen the monthly revenue figures of the State consistently exceeding the N2 billion mark since the beginning of the year.
Mr Olatona who made the pledge in Ado-Ekiti while featuring on Ekiti Loni /Ekiti Today, a live simulcast radio programme attributed the almost 100% increase in the revenue figures of the State to improved tax administrative processes introduced by the service and other critical steps it has taken in the recent past.
He said other steps taken to improve the State’s IGR include: adoption and utilization of innovative technology, strengthening of it’s Data Intelligence Department, training of EKIRS staff which has led to improved taxpayers relationship and more importantly the support of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for the Service to break new grounds.
The EKIRS Boss stressed that his agency would intensify its Tax drive particularly through futher strengthening of its Data Intelligence Department to enable it generate credible, corroborating database within the state which is an essential step towards identifying taxable persons and profiling them to determine the proper amount of tax due from them.
He said the IRS would also redouble its Tax Enlightenment and Education activities, to ensure taxpayers in the State are better enlightened on how and where to pay their taxes, and what the present administration is using the accrued revenue to do in terms of upgrading infrastructure, improving human capital development, health services and other critical areas.
Olatona who noted that tax compliance is a statutory responsibility for all taxable adults,
appealed to taxpayers to make payments promptly, adding that the government understands citizens’ economic challenges but relies on taxes to execute impactful projects

While notng that paying taxes is a civic duty every citizen must fulfil, he stressed that tax evasion is a crime that is more or less economic sabotage that could lead the offender to jail.
The EKIRS Boss said his Agency is leveraging on technology through the “Irorun De” digital platform which taxpayers can conveniently use to pay taxes from the comfort of their homes or offices via the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) GSM platforms on their phones ,
Speaking on the ongoing construction of the Revenue House in Ado-Ekiti, Olatona disclosed that the project initiated by Governor Oyebanji is making steady progress and will likely be completed and commissioned during Third Anniversary of the present administration in October.
He said the project would becoming a one-stop-shop and a hub for all major revenue generating agencies in the State.
The EKIRS Boss expressed confidence that the recently passed Tax Reform Bill awaiting the assent of President Bola Tinubu will revolutionize the Tax System in Nigeria by granting reliefs and exemptions to relatively poor enterprises while efficiently tracking and ensuring big companies pay exactly what is due from them.
He opined that businesses in Ekiti State would thrive and benefit immensely when the bill becomes operational
