Ekiti SUBEB Boss Calls for Timely Completion of 2025 Projects Ahead of 2026 Intervention

The Executive Chairman of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Femi Akinwumi, has urged contractors that emerge successful in the bidding process for the 2025 UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Projects to ensure timely completion and strict adherence to approved standards.

Speaking at the bid-opening ceremony held at the SUBEB headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, Prof. Akinwumi said prompt delivery of the 2025 projects was critical to the commencement of the newly approved 2026 intervention projects.

According to him, Ekiti State has already secured approval for the 2026 UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Projects, but implementation cannot begin until the 2025 projects are satisfactorily completed, documented and verified by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

“Ekiti State has received approval for the 2026 UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Projects, and we are eager to commence implementation. However, we cannot move forward until the 2025 projects are satisfactorily completed, documented and verified by UBEC,” he said.

Prof. Akinwumi stressed that proper documentation and timely execution of ongoing projects remain key requirements for accessing subsequent intervention funds, especially in view of the expanded scope of the 2026 programme.

He commended the transparent and competitive bidding process adopted for the projects, describing it as being in line with UBEC guidelines, the Ekiti State Bureau of Public Procurement regulations and the accountability-driven policies of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration.

While congratulating successful bidders, the SUBEB chairman warned against delays, substandard execution and project abandonment, noting that the Board would not hesitate to sanction erring contractors.

“We must avoid delays that could deny our children access to quality basic education and improved infrastructure,” he said, urging contractors to view the projects as a service to the education sector.

The 2025 intervention programme includes the construction and renovation of classrooms, supply of pupils’ and teachers’ furniture, provision of boreholes, perimeter fencing, and Early Childhood Care Development Education equipment across the 16 local government areas of the state.

The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajia Aisha Garba, represented by the Ekiti State UBEC Accountant, Mrs. Odeyemi, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency, accountability and global best practices in procurement.

She described the bid-opening exercise as a critical step toward engaging qualified contractors capable of delivering quality infrastructure that would improve educational outcomes.

Earlier, the SUBEB Commissioner for Project Management, Barr. Kayode Adeoye, praised Governor Oyebanji for his commitment to advancing basic education in the state and reiterated the Board’s zero tolerance for abandoned projects.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included the SUBEB Commissioner for Human Resource Management, Dr. Olufunke Fajobi; the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Michael Omolayo; representatives of UBEC; officials from the Ministries of Budget and Economic Planning, Information, Justice and Finance; as well as observers from civil society organisations and professional bodies.
