LASEMA/EKSEMA TEAM SOLICITS GREATER SYNERGY BETWEEN EKITI INFORMATION MINISTRY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCIES

The combined team of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA and the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency EKSEMA has held an interactive engagement forum with the Management of the Ekiti State Ministry of Information on modalities to improve disaster prevention management and emergency response time in the State.

The development followed Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s call for collaboration between the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and (EKSEMA) in a proactive move to improve emergency management and reduce response time as well as bolster security measures in the State.

The Chief Executive Officer of Logiccity and leader of the team, Mrs. Tolagbe Martins, explained that the engagement was fundamentally focused on prevention and effective dissemination of information about early warnings on disasters to targeted stakeholders in the state

Mrs. Martins stressed the important role of the Ministry of Information and proper communication in disaster management, noting the need for suitable coordination of emergency response, dissemination of phone numbers of Emergency Response Agencies as well as issuing of watch, warnings and advisories.

Noting that disaster prevention is a better option than mitigating the effects of disasters, she said advocacy and sensitization and behavioral change campaigns are key in achieving success in disaster prevention .

Responding, the State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun assured that the Ministry would continue to be proactive in managing information to support prompt emergency response in the State.

Rt. Hon. Olatunbosun, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Olusesan Alabi said that the Ministry had been using print, electronics as well as the digital media and interpersonal communication to proactively sensitize the public to prevent or minimize the impact of disasters and emergencies.

He stressed that “we focus on the media to educate the public about disasters; warning of hazards; gathering and transmitting information about affected areas” adding that “we also alert relevant government agencies, relief organizations and the public to specific needs as well as facilitate discussions about disaster preparedness”.

Reiterating the commitment of the Ministry to optimal efficient communication and information management, Olatunbosun added that the Ministry was open to further options and channels of communications to boost effective service delivery.

Earlier in his remarks ,the General Manager of the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency , Mr Oludare Asaolu said the visit of the LASEMA team which was on the invitation of Governor Oyebanji is aimed at strengthening the operations of Ekiti SEMA to enable it effectively deliver on it’s mandate of providing adequate and prompt response as well as sustaining interventions in all forms of emergency/disaster situations in the State
