Ekiti State Ministry of Agriculture has assured farmers in the state of the support of the State Government as the delay in the onset of the rains persists.
A statement issued by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon Ebenezer Boluwade and made available to newsmen during the weekend recalled that the Ministry had already predicted a delay in the onset of the 2024 rains since February this year when the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) released the annual Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP).
He said acting on the NiMet advisory, “We told our farmers then not to rush to plant when we had few rains in March because it was not in line with the forecast. We are aware that some farmers have already planted food crops like maize and rice in March this year and the late onset of the rains is already creating panic because if rain doesn’t start on time those crops stand to fail. We are using this medium to tell farmers in Ekiti State not to be disturbed as the state has put in place necessary support in form of subsidized improved seeds such as Maize, Rice and Cassava stems as well as Cocoa, Oil Palm and Cashew seedlings , agrochemicals, solar powered pumping machine and fertilizer to cushion the effects of the unfavorable weather on our teeming farmers”.

Boluwade disclosed that training on climate smart agriculture with the use of resilient and short gestation would be facilitated by the extension officers from the Ministry.
He stressed that the present administration is ready to kick out food scarcity out of the state noting that is the reason why it is embarking on big and audacious projects like opening farm clusters in 30 points within the state, embarking on a subsidized tractorization programme and while the security architecture of the State is being restructured to provide safe and peaceful farming environment
The Commissioner assured that the Oyebanji Administration would pursue its shared prosperity agenda which focuses on banishing food insecurity and lowering agricultural product prices in the state through sufficient food production without let or hindrance.
