Reposition Yourselves For Greater Prospects, SUBEB Chairman Urges Teachers

The Executive Chairman of Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Femi Akinwumi has urged teachers in Public Primary Schools the state to reposition themselves as they support government’s initiatives for actualization of more development in the sector.

Prof. Akinwumi gave the advice in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of new branch chairmen of the State Chapter of the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria(AOPSHON)

He reiterated the remarkable achievements of Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the basic education which cut across provision of infrastructures for a conducive teaching and learning environment, procurement and distribution of instructional materials to aid learning, regular payment of salaries and allowances, training and retraining of teachers, approval and payment of car/housing loans, elongation of the service of primary school teachers who are university graduates to grade level 16, among other incentives to improve the quality of teaching – learning outcomes.

The SUBEB boss who said there is nothing left that the Governor had not done to transform the standard of living of teachers in the state, assured them of government’s continued development of the basic education sector for better delivery of the UBE Programmes.

He said that the recent approval and employment of more than 300 security guards was to ensure that the schools facilities are well secured against the menace of hoodlums and vandals who are regularly invading the schools to cart away the essential materials in order to truncate government efforts.

Prof. Akinwumi said the state is lucky to have qualified and experienced personnel as teachers in its public primary schools, adding that the head teachers should thoroughly supervise their class teachers to make teaching more effective in the schools.

Describing teachers as people with special calling for the purpose of nation building, the chairman said they should be confident of themselves as reputable professionals in order to earn more respects from their counterparts in the civil service, stressing that teaching is not in any way inferior to other public service careers.

He re emphasized the free and compulsory education policy of the state government and the efforts to ensure zero reduction of Out Of School Children and therefore solicited more support of the head teachers in this regard warning them against collection of any illegal fees from the Pupils as the Executive Order 001 is still in force to reprimand any violator of the order.

Prof. Akinwumi appreciated the outgoing local government branch executive for playing their parts very well to improve the fortunes of the association and urged the newly elected chairmen to build upon the legacies of their predecessors to achieve a common goal for the association in particular and the overall development of basic education in general.

He asked them to eschew rancorous attitudes or whatever that can fan the ember of discord and uphold the sanctity of the association in order to continue to have a progressive, responsive and responsible association that all members can be proud of.

Prof. Akinwumi thereafter performed the oath of allegiance and the swearing – in of the new branch chairmen who are expected to oversee the affairs of the association in their respective local government areas for another period of four years.

Earlier in his welcome address, the state AOPSHON Chairman, Comrade Olusola Ajiborode thanked the government for doing everything to improve the lots of teachers, particularly in making their welfare a priority.

He lauded the contributions of the outgoing branch chairmen and called for support of the incoming executive and their collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the government to be able to deliver government”s mandate for the basic education.

Present at the ceremony were SA Teachers Affairs, Mr. Oluyede Fatai,, state NUT Chairman, Comrade Bamidele Dawodu, AOPSHON National Treasurer, Comrade Abimbola Ogunyemi, SUBEB management and Education Secretaries and Head teachers from the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.
