
Ekiti State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Olabimpe Aderiye has said that the State Government would continue to work with School Based Management Committees (SBMC) to enhance the participation of communities in school management for quality and effective governance structure.
Speaking in Ado-Ekiti during a sensitization programme for key stakeholders on the effective implementation of the Safe School Initiative (SSI) at the Junior Secondary School level in Ekiti State organized by State Ministry of Education in collaboration with the National Senior Secondary Education Commission under the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Aderiye said that the focus is to strengthen School Governance System that would guarantee community participation towards enhancing security and improving learning outcomes in schools in the State.
Aderiye highlighted the primary responsibilities of SBMCs to include setting priorities for effective management of resources at school level, contributing to the planning, management and monitoring of school for efficient decision-making and implementation process, supporting greater professional development opportunities for staff and engendering the interest of respective communities in school improvement.
She added that the SBMC are to also encourage parents to enroll their children, especially girls and support them till completion of their education, design and implement School Improvement Plan, serve as medium of transmission of skills, knowledge, value and traditions of the community to a younger generation and lead school development process.
Reiterating the commitment of the State Government to its free and compulsory education policy up to Senior Secondary School level, the Commissioner said that the SBMC which consisted of diverse group of stakeholders from the school and the host community including parents and teachers as well as representatives of community and religious groups amongst others should perceive themselves as partners in progress with the government, and should therefore continuously work towards enhancing improved learning environment, better students’ performance and more effective teaching methods.
She cautioned against levies in Schools, stressing that the State Government would not tolerate any form of fees as it may inflict avoidable trauma on the Students.
In his address, the Executive Secretary of National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), Mr. Iyela Ajayi, who was represented by Mr. Ali Zechariah said that School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) and Safe School initiative (SSI) are essential veritable pillars capable of strengthening education system and ensuring a safe learning environment.
Ajayi who stressed that the School-Based Management Committees serve as a crucial link between schools and their communities urged all stakeholders in the sector to take ownership of the initiatives and work collaboratively, share best practices and hold one another accountable.

In her remarks, the Chairman of the State Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Rhoda Ojo noted that Education is the pride of Ekiti State and as such urged participants to imbibe the culture of studying, asking questions where necessary, so as to be equipped with the knowledge of what is happening around them.
Speaking on the Safe Schools Initiative (SSI), the Head, Safe Schools Unit of the Ekiti State Command of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, Superintendent of Corps Razak Malomo, said that the success of the Programme relies heavily on the collective efforts of all stakeholders, because securing schools is a shared responsibility that cannot be achieved by one group alone.
Malomo added that the school-based management committee and school principals should not hesitate to lodge their complaints and challenges at any point in time, assuring them that if they channel their complaints appropriately, it will gain prompt attention.
Present at the forum were the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education; Mr Mike Omolayo, the Permanent Secretary Teaching Service Commission; Mr Michael Boluwade, School-Based Management Committee Chairmen, School Principals, amongst others.
