Ekiti State Government has directed transport unions operating within the state to revert to the old transport fares that were in place before December.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kehinde Ajobiewe gave the directive in Ado-Ekiti during a meeting with stakeholders and leaders of various transport unions the across the state.

The Commissioner expressed concern over the recent hike in transport fares, describing the current charges as exorbitant and burdensome to residents noting that charging ₦20,000 as fares from Ado-Ekiti to Lagos and ₦12,000 from Ado-Ekiti to Ibadan was unacceptable.

According to him, the fare from Ado-Ekiti to Ibadan should be reduced to between ₦5,000 and ₦6,000, while the Ado-Ekiti to Lagos route should return to the former rate of between ₦10,000 and ₦11,000.

Mr. Ajobiewe also frowned at the activities of some commercial motorcycle (Okada) operators who currently charge between ₦500 and ₦1,000 per drop, describing the development as exploitative.

He therefore directed that Okada fares be pegged at ₦300 per drop within the state.

In their responses, leaders of the various transport unions pledged full compliance with the directive and assured government and the people of Ekiti State that transport fares would revert to the old rates with immediate effect from today, Monday, December 22, 2025.
The executives of the various transport unions assured the Commissioner that they would not make transportation difficult for residents before, during, and after the Christmas and New Year celebrations, in the spirit of peace and cooperation.

Present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr.Bayo Abulola Chief Akinola Talabi, representing the Tricycle Operators’ Union; Mr. Akin Falaye Enikakolaye, Deputy Chairman, RTEAN; Mr. Kehinde Afolabi, Chairman, NACT; Mr. Akinluyi Kayode, Secretary, NURTW; and representatives of the Okada Riders Association, representing by the Secretary Mr Adelegan Olowuro among others.
