Ekiti State Government Commences Construction of Ultramodern Abattoir in Ado-Ekiti

The Ekiti State Government has commenced the construction of an ultramodern abattoir in Ado-Ekiti, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding public health, modernising livestock infrastructure, and driving sustainable economic growth across the state.

The landmark project, being implemented under the State Government’s livestock development framework with technical and financial support from the World Bank, will replace obsolete slaughter facilities and reposition meat processing in line with globally accepted sanitary, environmental, and operational standards.

Flagging off construction at the project site in Ado-Ekiti, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Ebenezer Boluwade, said the initiative reflects the Oyebanji administration’s deliberate focus on food safety, environmental protection, and the empowerment of livestock value-chain operators.

According to him, the facility will be equipped with modern slaughter slabs, cold storage facilities, efficient waste management systems, reliable water supply, and fully functional veterinary inspection units to guarantee hygienic meat processing and strict compliance with best practices.

Boluwade noted that upon completion, the ultramodern abattoir will create employment opportunities, curb environmental pollution, improve meat quality, and ensure a steady supply of safe and wholesome meat for residents of the state.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ojo Babatope, described the project as a lasting solution to longstanding challenges of poor sanitation and inadequate infrastructure in meat processing, while charging contractors to deliver the project according to approved standards and timelines.

Also speaking, the State Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe, said the project aligns with the objectives of the World Bank-supported programme to enhance livestock productivity, strengthen disease surveillance, and promote climate-smart practices across Ekiti State.

Stakeholders and residents have applauded the initiative, expressing confidence that the ultramodern abattoir will boost internally generated revenue and firmly position Ekiti State as a leader in safe, efficient, and sustainable meat processing in Nigeria.
