Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Ebenezer Boluwade, says the Biodun Oyebanji administration’s agricultural policies are transforming the sector through increased farmers’ productivity, reduced production costs and improved access to quality agricultural inputs.
Boluwade stated this while featuring on the state government’s multicast programme, S’ETIGBO, where he highlighted various interventions of the government aimed at strengthening food production and improving the livelihoods of farmers across the state.
The Commissioner disclosed that the state government had continued to subsidise agrochemicals for farmers, with beneficiaries selected from registered farmers’ associations across the state.
He said the intervention was part of government’s efforts to support farmers, reduce production challenges and enhance agricultural output.
Boluwade said Governor Oyebanji had prioritised youth participation in agriculture, noting that 13 agricultural centres had been established across the state to encourage young people to embrace farming and agribusiness.
He added that over 5,000 hectares of farmland had been cleared, while more than 10,000 farmers had benefited from the state’s free land-clearing and subsidised tractorisation support programme.
The Commissioner also announced that the government was establishing Ounje Ekiti retail outlets across the state in collaboration with local government councils to improve access to affordable food commodities.
He said the ministry was working closely with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to provide farmers with reliable weather information to guide their planting and harvesting decisions.
Highlighting major investments in the agricultural sector, Boluwade described the Ekiti dual-purpose multi-million-naira abattoir project as a landmark initiative that would strengthen the livestock value chain and create employment opportunities.
He disclosed that beneficiaries of the Ekiti Broilers Production Scheme (EBOPS) earned about N20 million in the first cohort and approximately N77 million in the second cohort, adding that the next cohort was expected to generate about N150 million.

The Commissioner further revealed that the African Development Bank (AfDB) had approved the establishment of a Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) in Ekiti State to promote agro-processing, value addition and unlock the economic potential of agricultural commodities, particularly cassava.
Boluwade noted that the state’s innovative agricultural policies had continued to receive national recognition, with some initiatives adopted by other states as models for improving food production.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to partnering with private investors and development partners to further expand the agricultural sector.
The Commissioner commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his support and commitment to agriculture, describing the administration’s investments in the sector as strategic measures towards achieving food security, creating employment opportunities and driving sustainable economic growth in Ekiti State.
