
The Ekiti State Government will on Monday, 26th May, 2025 commence the implementation of Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT) in the State.
A statement from the office of the Technical Adviser to the Governor on electronic Geographic Information System (eGIS ) and Land Management, Mr Olusanmi Akintobi, made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti explained that the programme which would last for 8 days involves analysis of waste at the Ilokun and Emirin dump sites and measurement of waste deposited into the recovery sites at Oke Ori Omi, Oke Bola and Adehun all in Ado-Ekiti.
The statement also disclosed that the programme will capture packing and sorting out of waste generated everyday in household buildings by conducting waste sampling from 90 selected households of which 30 each from low, middle, and high-income areas as well as measure waste generation per capita and composition over 8 days to account for daily/weekly variations
According to the statement, the program is expected to improve on establishing municipal solid waste management strategy and infrastructure investment opportunities for sustainable waste management system, that would include green job creation and mitigation of risks of climate change. as well as to make Ado Ekiti attract private sector investment into waste management.
It assured that professionals, competent and well trained hands are on ground from both the Waste Management Authority and the Ministry of Environment to handle the projects
The statement noted that Ado Ekiti was one of the cities that joined Africa Clean Cities Platform in November 2023. and selected for the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT) application based on the criteria of the Expressions of Interest launched in 2024 by ACCP Secretariat and hosted by the Urban Basic Services Section of the UN-Habitat.
It will be recalled that Ekiti State Government in collaboration with the UNHabitat had earlier organized a training on Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT) last year of which high-level state officials and over 50 participants were taken through the process of conducting the WaCT survey and waste assessment quartering method.
