EKITI STATE GOVERNMENT BEGINS ENFORCEMENT OF STREET TRADING BAN IN ADO-EKITI

Over 30 Traders Prosecuted on First Day

Ekiti State Government has commenced full enforcement of the ban on street trading in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, following the expiration of a grace period earlier granted to traders.

The enforcement exercise, which began on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, is part of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s ongoing efforts to promote urban order, ensure public safety and enhance the aesthetic and infrastructural development of the city.

Speaking to newsmen in Ado, the State Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Mrs. Omotayo Adeola, said the enforcement followed a relocation ultimatum issued by Governor Oyebanji during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Palace of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti and the deadline, which expired on July 22, was followed by a two-week grace period that has now expired.

Mrs. Adeola stated that a special Taskforce, backed by security operatives, has been deployed across key areas of Ado-Ekiti, including Okesa, Okeyinmi, Oja Oba, Atikankan and Under the Bridge to implement the relocation directive issued to street traders, adding that goods belonging to violators were seized and more than 30 street traders were reportedly prosecuted on the first day of the operation.

The State Commissioner who reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive trading environment, noted that affected traders have been directed to move to the newly completed ultra-modern Agric Olope Market, which was purpose-built to accommodate all relocated vendors.

“All illegal structures and kiosks mounted along roadsides and unauthorized locations must be dismantled immediately as the government will not compromise on its resolve to restore order and protect the integrity of the city”, she warned.

The Commissioner called on market leaders and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government to ensure a peaceful and smooth transition, stressing that anyone who defies the directive would face legal consequences.
